Registered Nurse (RN) A registered nurse earns a salary of about $46,000-$66,000 yearly. To obtain an entry level position as a registered nurse, an individual must graduate from an approved nursing program. Then, he or she must then pass a national exam to get a license to practice. This exam is the NCLEX-RN. Most states have additional requirements beyond the degree and exam; these must be checked individually by state.

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) and Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) salary is about $35,000-$45,000 a year. (This position is referred to as Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in some states). This position requires a training program that can be completed in approximately one year. LPN’s and LVN’s work under the supervision of registered nurses (RN’s) and physicians.

Nurse Practitioner (NP) A Nurse Practitioner (NP) earns a salary of about $80,000 or more a year. NP's have master’s degrees in nursing. In many states, nurse practitioners can even practice independently, while nurses without this designation can only practice under a physician’s supervision. NP’s are also permitted to prescribe medication. NP’s can specialize in many areas like pediatric, mental health, acute care, and other areas of nursing.

Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) earns about $73,000 or more in pay each year. CNS's are required to hold a master’s degree and can specialize in many areas. CNS specialists tend to provide patient care and train staff in hospitals.

Nurse Trainers A nurse trainer earns about $60,000 in pay each year. With the growing popularity of nursing degrees, nursing schools need trainers. For nursing students who need financial assistance, this is an area worth considering for many reasons. Not only can nurse trainers specialize in all of the areas other nurses can, but also the need for nurse trainers has resulted in exceptional scholarships available for nurse trainers receiving Master’s and PhD’s who agree to teach full time at an accredited school for four years.

Nurse Supervisors A Nurse Supervisor earns a salary of about $75,000 or more a year. Nurse Supervisors train, hire, evaluate, and work with nurses on staff. These jobs often are salaried without over-time pay, and as with other managerial positions, the nature of this work can be more stressful than that of staff nurses in many ways. These jobs are well-suited for individual who prefer leadership and business roles.

Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) A Clinical Nurse Leader salary is about $50,000 or more annually. The CNL is a relatively new position. These specialists coordinate care to improve clinical and budgeting. This position requires a bachelor’s degree, plus two to three additional years of study.

Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) A CNM earns about $85,000 and up a year in pay. CNMs help deliver babies. A Certified Nurse Midwife is an RN who has completed a program in midwifery certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives; then, he or she must also pass a national exam. It is possible to be a CNM without a master’s degree, though most CNM’s have a master’s.

Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) A CRNA receives pay of about $135,000 a year. To become a CRNA, one must complete an accredited master’s degree program in nurse anesthesia (typically 2-3 years long), and then pass a national exam for certification. In some areas, particularly rural locations, CRNA’s provide most of the anesthesia services available to patients. This area of specialization for currently offers the highest paying nurse jobs on the market, making it a desirable specialization.
